Union Memorial Hospital, Tower Renovation & Heart Institute

Henry Adams worked with Union Memorial Hospital and the prime architect to complete a comprehensive phased renovation of the existing 9-story patient care bed tower. The project began with the development of a master plan for each of the six inpatient unit floors to determine the appropriate use for each floor from three through nine. The implementation of the overall project began with the construction of a new Critical Care Unit. Dedicated to the fifth floor of the hospital, this 24 patient bed unit is approximately 27,750 SF. Since then, construction activities have been completed in various phases on every floor. These include a new Geriatric Evaluation & Management (GEM) Unit on the east half of the third floor, renovation to the inpatient units on the sixth, seventh, and ninth floor, as well as the creation of a new 38 bed private patient room Orthopedic Unit on the eighth floor. The highlight of the overall master plan includes the design for a new Heart Institute on the fourth floor of the patient care bed tower. This unit consists of three open-heart operating rooms, a Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), and step-down medical/surgical private patient rooms.  Approximately 125,000 GSF of the patient care tower was renovated as part of the overall project.
