Baltimore City Public Schools, Baltimore Design School
Henry Adams provided the MEP engineering design for the adaptive re-use of the 115,000 GSF abandoned 3-story Crown Cork and Seal Machine Shop into an award-winning Design School for Baltimore City Public School System. The existing building is on the Maryland Historic Registry and achieved a Baltimore City Green Building Level 3 Green Star rating.
The HVAC system included central station water-cooled air conditioning units, variable volume terminal units with hot water reheat coils, induced draft cooling tower, condenser water system and pumps, boilers, heating water system and pumps, ductless split systems, laboratory exhaust, kitchen hood exhaust, central relief air, woodshop exhaust, automatic controls, and sound attenuators. The plumbing systems included sanitary/vent, natural gas and booster system, domestic hot and cold water, domestic water heaters, water tempering valves, tempered water for emergency fixtures. Fire Protection design included standpipes and wet sprinkler system fed from a fire pump.
The electrical design included lighting, stage lighting, exterior lighting, power, emergency power, duct banks, 2500A switchboard, fire alarm, and technology. All the building system designs were modeled in BIM using the Revit Platform for close coordination with all disciplines to maintain the architectural vision. The majority of the building did not have ceilings therefore appearance was critical and the Revit model provided the design team a 3D replica of the building design.
The project was awarded $3M in Sustainable Communities Tax Credits for its dedication to restoring a historic structure in a sustainable manner.
