ATF Facility Energy Retrofit

Henry Adams provided mechanical and electrical engineering design and construction services for the energy retrofit for the 180,000 SF Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives facility in Martinsburg, West Virginia. The mechanical design involved the demolition of two existing 160-ton centrifugal water-cooled chillers and the installation of 13 water-to-water geothermal heat pump units coupled to a geothermal well field consisting of 140, 500-foot deep geothermal wells. The photovoltaic (PV) design included a total of 342kW of self-ballasted and building integrated PV modules saving 377 MWh/year. The grid connected system has two inverters due to building geometry and location of the PV arrays. The PV system has a roof mounted weather station and is connected to the Ethernet for monitoring the system performance. The PV design included a structural roof evaluation to determine existing loading capacities and evaluated PV array locations and tilt angles that would affect snow loading.
