Henry Adams provided the MEP engineering design for a complete replacement of the complex’s automatic temperature control systems with a new direct-digital control (DDC) system with electronic control/electronic actuation. The GSA complex encompasses two buildings, the Mitchell H. Cohen Courthouse Annex (constructed in 1991) and the U.S. Post Office & Courthouse (last renovated in 2000). The purpose of the project is to replace each building’s automatic temperature control system with one central DDC system to improve operating and energy efficiency. A complete building energy analysis was completed in order to estimate annual energy savings associated with the Direct Digital Control System Replacement project. Modifications included reducing and monitoring the outdoor air quantities for each building as the outdoor air requirements have changed significantly since the Courthouse Annex and Post Office building were constructed or last renovated. The outdoor air modifications are be based on ASHRAE Standard 62.1-2007 requirements. In addition to the outdoor air modifications, a new lighting control system was designed for the building(s) and integrated into the new DDC System to provide remote access and control.
